18/09/18 Highland Archaeology Festival
There are only a few weeks now until the Highland Archaeology Festival starts. The museum is running some events and an exhibition this year as part of the Highland wide programme which runs from 29th Sept – 19th Oct. To find out more please visit our events page
3/03/2018 Volunteers wanted
As our new season approaches we are looking for new volunteers to join the team at the museum. When the museum we need volunteers to work in the shop and let visitors into the museum. We also need volunteers to hep in our gardens and to help with setting up a museum membership scheme. The museum now has 5 loans boxes that schools can borrow. The boxes contain resources such objects, photographs and archival material such as letters, newspapers etc. For more information visit our Schools page

18/09/2017 Workshops for the Wool and Textile Festival
On Saturday 28th October the Highland Wool and Textile Festival will be at Strathpeffer Pavilion and to link in we are running some workshops. We have another photography workshop for kids on Saturday 16th September that replaces the cancelled workshop back in August. It is suitable for age 8+ and will teach kids all the basics they need to know about photography and using a camera. This workshop is FREE but donations o the museum are welcome. It’s going to be a busy autumn here at the museum as we have a garden project underway. If you are interested in planning how to renovate a garden, planting for autumn and winter pots, how to compost and deal with weeds we have a garden group session on Saturday 2nd September. As part of the Highland Archaeology Festival we are holding a craft weekend here at the museum. On Saturday 7th October Anne Ferguson will be running a stained glass workshop – £15 per person. 31/07/2017 Summer Activities for Children * Please Note: The Photography workshop on 1st August and the Nursery Rhymes workshop on 2nd August are now cancelled.
The museum is running some workshops for children during the school holidays. For wee ones there is a Going on a Bear Hunt workshop and a Nursery Rhymes workshop with stories, crafts and songs suitable for age 3-5 years. And for older children there are crafts such as Jewellery Making & Glass Painting. We are also running a photography workshop where children can learn camera skills and take photos in and around the museum. Their photos can then be entered in the Highland Archaeology Festival Photography Competition. For more information on the activities visit our Events page.

The museum shop now stocks official NC500 merchandise. We have postcards, coasters, fridge magnets, mugs and notepads with the NC500 map design. EMBRACE gift shop, at the station, also have NC500 tea towels, tote bags, keyrings and collectors tins in stock.
17/04/2017 New Temporary Exhibition
As the season begins for the museum we have a new temporary exhibition. One section explores the role of Women’s Aid in supporting children and young people and the other celebrates the contribution of Ross-hire women to their local communities. 8/03/2017 Speaking Out – 40 Years of Scottish Women’s Aid
In 2016 an exhibition was created to celebrate the 40 years of Scottish Women’s Aid. Speaking Out: Recalling Women’s Aid in Scotland us touring around Scotland. From 7th March – 1st April the exhibition will be at Inverness Museum & Art Gallery and the Highland Archive Centre. The Highland Museum of Childhood has been working with Ross-shire Women’s Aid and a small exhibition about children and Women’s Aid will be in the museum from 1st April.

18/01/2017 Canopy Works Finished

The museum Annual General meeting will take place on Monday 5th December 2016.
14/11/2016 Scottish Book Week
We’re excited about having author Alan Durant back with us for Scottish Book Week. He will be running a Writing Children’s Stories workshop for adults on Saturday 26th November. And on the day before, Friday 25th, we’re having a book swap after school for children. Alan will also be there to meet everyone and maybe swap a book with you! 15/09/2016 Canopy Restoration Update
Finally the work will be starting on our canopy to restore it. Work starts on the 26th September for 6 weeks and will be carried out by William Gray Construction Ltd . All businesses including the museum will be open during the works and there will still be public access along the platform.
13/09/2016 Highland Archaeology Festival 2016
The Highland Archaeology Festival was launched this week. Starting on the 1st October there will be events and activities for all ages happening across the Highlands. A new initiative – The Museum Passport Object Trail – is encouraging visitors to look for mystery objects in different museums across the area. And there’s a prize for the person who visits the most objects!

Our new leaflet about the Railway Station is now available. The research project to find out the whole history of the station and the railway came to an end in June. The leaflet details the history through the decades of the station and its use. To view it click here railway-station-history-leaflet
